Following the previous Preakness Stakes Preview we’re now moved a little over a week away from the final jewel in the 2020 Triple Crown season with the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico Racecourse and while some questions have been answered, many are still up in the air.
We now know that the Belmont Stakes winner – Tiz the Law – will NOT be running. Trainer Barkley Tagg said earlier this week that they’d be on course instead to give the big horse a break and instead train up to the Breeder’s Cup Classic in November.
A final decision on the status of filly Swiss Skydiver will not be made until Monday, as trainer Ken McPeek isn’t in a hurry to make a final decision. Swiss Skydiver most recently finished third in the Kentucky Oaks and prior to that finished second behind Art Collector in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.
As of the writing of this blog, the main contenders for next Saturday’s Preakness Stakes appear to be Authentic and Art Collector. Thousand Words, like Art Collector, was also scratched from the Kentucky Derby will be another top contender and would likely have similar odds to Swiss Skydiver, should the filly run.
A few new faces that are still on the fence for the Preakness include Mystic Guide, who most recently won the Jim Dandy Stakes, Dr. Post, who finished a non-threatening fourth in the Jim Dandy and Happy Saver. With the Breeder’s Cup only six weeks away there are many other prep races owners have as options besides the Preakness.
All in all, the Preakness is shaping up to be another exciting race and it will be interesting to see if Authentic is as Authentic as his Kentucky Derby looked or whether there’s a new shooter who will deny him the Derby-Preakness double.
