Barca to Edge Ahead in Title Race?

It has been an up and down kind of season for Barca, which included an unusually early exit from the Champions League, but throughout they have kept in touch with the two Madrid teams, and with Atleti and Real dropping points at the weekend they now have a chance of going to the top of the league.

Despite coming under pressure for Barca’s round of 16 UCL exit at the hands of PSG, manager Ronald Koeman has kept a settled, youthful side, and domestically they still have another title in their sights. A win over Granada will take them a point clear of Atleti in second and three points ahead of third-placed Real.

Granada Exceeding Expectations Again

The visitors are currently eighth in La Liga and have had a season that has again exceeded expectations. Last season’s outstanding seventh-placed finish was regarded by many as a one-off venture into the top half of the league for the Nazaríes, but they are in with a genuine chance of repeating that feat this season.

Granada has, however, stumbled a little of late, and suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Sevilla at the weekend, and Barca’s current form guide of WWLWW compares favorably with the visitor’s LLWWL.

Also in Barcelona’s favor is an outstanding record against Granada, with 14 wins from the 16 matches played between the two, although in their most recent match-up – in the Copa del Rey in February – Barca needed extra time to overcome them in a dramatic 5-3 victory.

Messi and Griezmann to Lead Barca Line

In terms of team news, Barca should be able to call on the services of Ousmane Dembele, who began his comeback with a substitute appearance at the weekend after a long-term absence, but will definitely be without Ansu Fati and Philippe Coutinho, both long-term absentees. With Martin Braithwaite also still missing through injury, Koeman looks likely to persist, at least initially, with a 3-5-2 shape with Messi and Antoine Griezmann as the front two.

For Granada, Neyder Lozano, Domingos Duarte, and Luis Milla are all still out through injury, and there is also a doubt around the fitness of Alberto Soro. But manager Diego Martínez will, despite the recent wobble, almost certainly persist with the 3-4-2-1 formation that has served him so well this season.

Barcelona vs Granada Best Bets

The chance for Barcelona to hit the front in the race for the La Liga title is a huge incentive for the Catalans, and for them to edge ahead with five games to go would be a huge statement of intent. While Granada has proved themselves more than capable during this and the last campaign when the stakes are at their highest it is usually the big players that deliver – the very thing that makes them great players.

So, the question here, for me, is how many. Granada, for all of its recent successes, does concede a lot of goals – an average of 1.65 per game – and so an early one for Barca could make for a really difficult night for the visitors. An on-song Messi is hard to handle in any given game, let alone one where another league title is in his sights. I fear for Granada.
