Guadeloupe Heads Held High

Guadeloupe’s first Gold Cup match for a decade may have ended in a 3-1 defeat by Costa Rica but against high-ranking opponents it was expected, and for them to have qualified for the tournament at all is a huge result for them. To have scored a goal will have given them some confidence and they will look to improve upon their 37.7-percent possession when they face Jamaica later.

The concession of two goals inside the opening 21 minutes against Costa Rica was disappointing but for the remaining 69, Guadeloupe gave as good they got – something that bodes well for tonight’s game, especially as they were down to ten from 54 minutes onwards after Steve Solvet was red-carded after picking up two yellows. A similar, sustained level of performance tonight could yet yield a point.

The task for Guadeloupe manager Jocelyn Angloma is a big one, however, and to get a squad of predominantly amateur soccer players (they have just eight professionals in their squad) to hit that level for a full 90 minutes is not easy, especially when we consider Jamaica has not lost a game in their last ten Gold Cup group stage matches.

Lackluster Jamaica

The Jamaicans’ tournament got off to its expected winning start against Suriname but it was far from plain sailing and they were forced to work hard against spirited and energetic opponents, who incidentally enjoyed the majority of possession. Theodore Whitmore saw his team get off to the perfect start – a goal after just six minutes –  but they failed to capitalize and Suriname missed several good chances to pull level. In the end, a  26th-minute goal from Bobby Decordova-Reid was enough to seal the three points but it was an unconvincing display.

Yet, performance level aside, it was three points in the bag for the Reggae Boyz and they now know a win over Guadeloupe will be enough to secure their place in the knockout phase of the competition. Even another disjointed performance may just be enough for them to get the win they need.

Attacking Options for Jamaica

Guadeloupe center-back Solvet will, of course, miss this one after his red-card against Costa Rica, with Thomas Pineau looking likely to be his replacement, while Raphael Mirval is guaranteed to lead their line after his goal against  Los Ticos took him to fourth in his country’s list of all-time scorers. Keeper Yohann Thuram will need to be at his best against Jamaica and will need to put his early, costly mistake against Costa Rica behind him if they are to keep things tight early on in the game.

For Jamaica, Shamar Nicholson will again lead the line, having scored his third Gold Cup goal against Suriname, and is again expected to be joined by Decordova-Reid whose goal in the same game was just his second for his country – his first coming as far back as October 2019. The Jamaicans, however, have plenty of other attacking options, one of whom is Philadelphia Union striker Cory Burke who has scored five times in his 18 international appearances.

Guadeloupe vs Jamaica Best Bets

While Guadeloupe will give this one a good shot, and I am certain they will make life difficult for the Jamaicans, they do lack the quality it takes to either stand firm or to create something from nothing in those big moments. They were, however, very good against Costa Rica, aside from those big moments.

This will again be quite tight, but I see Jamaica’s extra quality being enough for a hard-fought win, possibly via a goal in each half.

Pick: Jamaica to win 2-0 (+500) / Jamaica to win both halves (+165)
