Tournament Over for Guatemala

Guatemala’s tournament is effectively over after two defeats in their first two games but they will not want to finish bottom of the group with zero points, and so will be hoping for a big performance against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday. Their late call-up to the tournament and subsequent lack of preparation has not helped their cause, but they have produced some good moments.

Little was expected of them in their second game against Mexico and the 0-3 scoreline was a fair representation of the game, in which they had only 29-percent of the possession. The Mexicans were simply too good, out-shot Guatemala by 17-4 and it was a defeat that officially knocked Los Chapines out of the tournament.

Against T&T, they meet an opponent they know they at least have a chance of beating and so will approach this one with a different mindset. They will, however, need to get more possession of the ball than they did against either Mexico or El Salvador; something that is quite feasible as the stats show that Trinidad and Tobago have averaged even less time on the ball.

Still a Chance for Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago have fared only marginally better than Guatemala in this tournament but by virtue of that surprise point they picked up in their opening game when they drew 0-0 with Mexico, they still have a shot at qualifying for the knockout phase. In order for this to happen, they need to beat Guatemala by at least a couple of goals and they hope that El Salvador can do the same to Mexico.

For this to happen though, or at least give themselves a chance, they must find a better level of performance than they did against El Salvador; a game in which they created a couple of decent chances but were generally second-best in most areas of the pitch. Manager Angus Eve will need to release the shackles on his defensive-minded team if they are to have any hope of staying in the tournament.

Expect a More Attacking Game

Guatemala is expected to stick with a back-five – a defensive ploy designed to keep the game as tight as possible for as long as possible – but will have to find a way to get more numbers forward if they are to finish this tournament off with a win. Like T&T, they will believe they can win this game and so a more expansive approach will be called for, which could make for a more entertaining, end-to-end match. They look likely to stick with striker Darwin Lom but will look to get more numbers forward to support him.

Trinidad and Tobago manager Angus Eve went with a back three against El Salvador of Jelani Peters, Aubrey David, and Mekeil Williams and brought Kevin Molino into the team as his main striker, but may look to go with a flat back four and two up top as he looks to eke out the win he so desperately needs.

Guatemala vs Trinidad and Tobago Best Bets

While neither team has performed well at this tournament, the incentive for Trinidad and Tobago is far greater and, for me, that could well be the deciding factor here. Expect this to be a more attacking game than either of these two have experienced in this tournament so far, and so there could be goals. I see T&T edging this but only after a long evening and lots of toing and froing.

Pick: Trinidad and Tobago to win (+135) / More than 2.5 goals (+130)
