The two top sides in Group D at the Gold Cup will lock horns on Tuesday as Honduras vs Qatar kicks off in Houston. The Hondurans have already booked their ticket to the knockout stages, while Qatar needs a tie at the very least to go through but that also depends on how Panama fares in their final game against Grenada.
This will be the first meeting ever between Honduras and Qatar.

Honduras in Good Form
Los Catrachos may not be in the toughest group, but they’ve put forward two solid showings thus far. In the opening game of the Gold Cup, Fabian Coito’s side buried Grenada 4-0 in a truly dominant performance. Then just days later, Honduras won 3-2 versus Panama in an absolutely goal-filled thriller.
Romell Quioto was the leading catalyst up top as he scored a brace for his country, including the winner in the 65th minute. The CF Montreal product has now bagged three goals in the competition, making him the joint top-scorer alongside Canada star Cyle Larin.
While Honduras already has a place in the quarterfinals, the result of this match will be vital. If they can secure a victory or a draw, Coito’s men will play El Salvador on Saturday. But if the Hondurans do taste defeat and end up in second place, a very tough Mexico squad will be their opponent.

Their form this time around is already a far cry from the 2019 edition where La H finished at the bottom of their group. On the whole, though, Honduras has been successful in this tournament, reaching the knockout phases in six of the last nine Gold Cups.
They’ve scored seven goals and conceded just twice in as many games but the Hondurans will be put to the test against a Qatar side who has no issues finding the back of the net either.

Qatar Looking to Make Some Noise
Qatar finds itself in its first-ever Gold Cup after being invited by CONCACAF as a guest participant. They’ve shown well too, playing to a thrilling 3-3 draw with Panama then throttling Grenada, 4-0. All of these oppositions are unfamiliar territory for Felix Sanchez’s men, but the side has managed to hold their own.
Qatar currently has four points, while Panama has just one. With that being said, the Maroons will want to secure at least a draw here in order to progress to the quarterfinals. They also have a much better goal difference than the Panamanians right now, so things are looking positive for Qatar to advance.
Sanchez’s squad will want to sharpen it up defensively on Tuesday though against Honduras. They essentially went goal for goal with Panama and luckily ended up settling for a draw, but that could come back to bite them in this clash.
Last night, Qatar’s Almoez Ali became the first player to score at the Asian Cup, Copa America, and the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Qatar will be looking to Almoez Ali and Akram Afif to provide some brilliance in the final third with both players already scoring twice apiece so far. Afif has also tallied a competition-best two assists alongside teammate Pedro Miguel, who has been one of their main providers.
Coming into this game, Qatar is unbeaten in nine appearances dating back to December of 2020. Along the way, the Maroons have beaten the likes of India, El Salvador, and Azerbaijan.

Honduras vs Qatar Prediction
The results have been extremely similar for both teams in Group D. The only difference was Honduras scoring one goal more against Panama to pull out a victory. With no history between the Hondurans and Qatar, it’s hard to take anything from past results because there hasn’t been any.
However, they’ve proven to be two of the most attacking-minded sides in the Gold Cup to this point. With that being said, I expect goals to be scored which means the over will hold value. But, as for the result, this could very well end in a draw.
Pick: Draw +225, Over 2.5 Goals (+100)
