The Terriers Still With Work to Do

For Huddersfield, this campaign has been one of inconsistency. They currently sit in 18th in the Championship, four places and seven points clear of the drop zone, but a run of just two wins in their last 16 Championship games has seen them dragged back into the relegation fight.

The Terriers have, however, recently shown signs of a mini-revival and have collected six points from their last four games, in the process giving their under-fire coach Carlos Corberan some much-needed breathing space. This improvement has come off the back of an improved defensive resolve, which had seen them concede just one goal in their last three games. Prior to this mini-run, they had gone 15 games without a clean sheet.

Brentford Fading

Brentford’s aim is still automatic promotion but after recording just one win in their last four, they have slipped to fourth in the table and seven points adrift of second place, albeit with a game in hand. Thomas Frank’s men may be running out of games to catch the top two, Norwich and Watford. But having spent the whole season battling with those two and Swansea for the automatic places, they will not be throwing in the towel just yet.

But, while still managing to collect 11 points from their last six, Brentford have watched the Canaries and Hornets solidly churn out wins and open up a gap. Dropped points against Derby County and Nottingham Forest – both teams in the bottom half – have been costly for the Bees and Frank knows there is no more room for error or dropped points. Now is the time for them to turn the screw and try and exert some pressure on those above them.

Pressure on the Bees

The stats clearly point to an away win, but historically things have always been very even between these two teams. In their 16 head-to-heads, Huddersfield have won seven, Brentford six, and three have been drawn, although, perhaps of more significance, is the reverse fixture back in September, which was comfortably won 3-0 by the Bees.

As mentioned above, the incentive for Brentford to win here is massive. With a game in hand and also a game against Watford scheduled for the penultimate weekend of the season, the one thing they cannot allow is the Hornets to increase that gap before they play each other. The Bees desperately need top goalscorer Ivan Toney – who has gone 371 minutes without a goal in open play but has scored a succession of penalties – to stay fit and to keep scoring. He remains the key.

In terms of team news, Corberan will be without the services of striker Josh Koroma, Dutch midfielder Carel Eiting and German center-back Christopher Schindler, all of whom would have been likely starters, while winger Rolando Aarons and full-back Harry Toffolo are both considered doubtful. The injury problems for Brentford are fewer – just long-term absentees Rico Henry and Shandon Baptiste are missing – and so, in theory, Frank has a strong, fit squad to pick from.

Huddersfield vs Brentford Best Bet

Everything here points to the away win and -120 looks a fair price in the circumstances. The only question is whether Brentford can handle the pressure that has been heaped upon them after dropping those points against Forest and Derby, and there is certainly a belief in the Huddersfield camp that they can eke out a draw. And so, on that basis, I see value in the +245 for the draw and the +310 for Ivan Toney to be the first goalscorer is also well worth a look.

Pick: Huddersfield & Brentford to draw 2-1 (+245) / Toney first goalscorer (+310)
