The 2020 Euro Tournament is now in full swing, as Hungary prepares to host Portugal at the Ferenc Puskás Stadium in Budapest on Tuesday. This fixture represents the first being played in Group F, the most talented group in the competition.
With Hungary, Portugal, Germany and France all vying to qualify, every game is imperative. While Portugal won the 2016 edition of the Euros, Hungary also put in a good showing. In fact, the Hungarians won their group, beating out Iceland, Portugal and Austria.

Despite Portugal winning their last two head-to-head matches against Hungary, their match at the 2016 Euros was one of the best of the tournament. Portugal found themselves down three different times in the game. Nonetheless, a goal from Nani and a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo gave them the point they needed to advance to the knockout rounds.

Since 2016, it is fair to say that Portugal have gotten even better. A team that was one built around the feet of Ronaldo, now featuring blistering, young talent at nearly every position. From Diogo Jota to Bruno Fernandes to Ruben Dias, this team has plenty of world class players. For Hungary, the task to stop the Portuguese will be even more difficult than in was four years ago. Having to also play France and Germany makes this Marco Rossi’s most winnable contest.
Joao Cancelo to Miss out for Portugal
Furthermore, on Sunday we learned that Joao Cancelo has unfortunately tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, he has been replaced in the squad by AC Milan right-back, Diogo Dalot. This absence will be a huge miss for Fernando Santos’s side as Cancelo is one of their more consistent figures in defense. Additionally, this could turn into an area of exploitation for Hungary and their wingers. With Dias and Pepe in central defense, do not expect Adam Szalai or Roland Sallai to have much success in that area.

For obvious reasons, the Hungarians will have a lot of pressure resting on the shoulders of their defense against Portugal. The two names to focus on in defense are RB Leipzig’s Peter Gulacsi and Willi Orban. Both of these players are seasoned veterans and will be crucial to the organization of Hungary’s back line. In recent games, their defense has actually played quite well against the likes of San Marino, Andorra, Cyprus and Ireland, only conceding one goal.

Portugal’s Offense is one of the Best in Europe
Sometimes you just have to tell it as it is, and in this case Portugal are just the better side in this game. Hungary are worthy competition, but in all seriousness, we are talking about the likes of Ronaldo, Fernandes and Bernardo Silva. Truly, these players are some of the best creators in world football. When you add in a player like Jota, who was spectacular at Liverpool this year, this offense really becomes overwhelming. As a result, only two teams were able to hold them scoreless this year, Spain and France.

In 2016, it is fair to say that Portugal struggled at times in the Euro tournament. They drew all three games in the group stage, and for the most part it was the Ronaldo show. Additionally, the side was much older and lacked the attacking depth they now possess. This is a different team now, and most importantly, it has much more balance.

Hungary vs Portugal Best Bet
Overall, the best bet for this match is the over on 2.5 total goals with odds of -103. Despite the short odds, this bet still has great value for a matchup that has broke 2.5 total goals in five out of the last seven meetings. With such a difficult group, I do not expect either of these teams to sit back and be okay with a stalemate, resulting in an offensive showcase.
Pick: Over 2.5 total goals (-103)
