In a league where PSG typically runs away with top honors, it’s been a much different season in Ligue 1. The title race is very much up for grabs with four games left, as just six points separate Lille in first and Lyon in fourth place.
Needless to say, Sunday’s meeting between Monaco and Lyon is massive for their European hopes. The visitors had the upper hand in the reverse tie back in October, securing a 4-1 victory. However, Monaco did knockout their matchday 35 counterparts in the Coupe de France quarterfinals last week.

Monaco in Top Form
It’s been two years since Monaco was in any European competition, previously spending three campaigns in the Champions League. This season though, a return to one of the biggest competitions on the continent remains a serious reality.
Niko Kovac’s side has won five straight matches heading into Sunday’s enormous clash with Lyon. In fact, their form has been absolutely flawless since the turn of the year, tasting defeat just once in 17 games.

Even more impressive? Monaco has conceded once in their last nine appearances while bagging 19 goals. In fact, Les Monégasques possesses one of the most dangerous attacks in the French top flight. Wissam Ben Yedder leads the squad with 18 goals, while strike partner Kevin Volland has also netted 15 times and contributed seven assists.
Monaco has fully proven they have what it takes to win it all this term, having beaten the current title-holders PSG on both occasions while drawing and losing a nailbiter to Lille.
However, Kovac’s men sit in third place right now and after Sunday’s match, they don’t play any of the top sides again. Therefore, Monaco will be hoping the two teams above them potentially drop points while they aim to end the term with four straight wins and reach their European dreams, while maybe even snatching the title away from Paris or Lille.
They will also have a nice taste in their mouth after beating Lyon 2-0 in the French cup on April 21st.

Lyon Looking to End Monaco’s Brilliant Spell
Rudi Garcia’s squad desperately needs a result here if a return to the Champions League is to remain possible. But, it will be a daunting task. Lyon isn’t in the greatest of shape currently, going 2-1-2 in their previous five games.
Matchday 34 saw them lose a heartbreaker to leaders Lille by a score of 3-2. It really was a clash where Les Gones had a stranglehold, having scored two early goals within the first 35 minutes. But, Lyon allowed their opponents to hit them with three unanswered, topped off by Burak Yilmaz’s winner in the 85th minute for the visitors.
It was a clear opportunity to gain ground in the top-four, but Garcia’s side let the full points slip right through their fingertips. There’s no question it definitely hurt and they will absolutely have a fire in their belly in another huge match against Monaco.
Also, Lyon has been in great form on the road, losing just once all season. In fact, OL is unbeaten in 15 fixtures away from Groupama Stadium, which is the longest run in Ligue 1.

The likes of Memphis Depay, Karl Toko Ekambi, and Tinotenda Kadewere will need to come out firing on all cylinders and do some damage against a rock-solid Monaco backline.

Monaco vs Lyon Prediction
Despite Lyon’s tremendous form on the road, Monaco has been just as good on home soil. An 11-5-1 record at the Stade Louis II reflects just that. It’s only a matter of time until their great run ends, but with the chance to potentially lock down third place, I don’t see them losing.
It’s also important to note that none of the last nine league meetings between these two French heavyweights have ended in a draw. Take the hosts for a crucial victory.
Pick: Monaco (+130)
