Timeform pick out the three best bets at Southwell on Tuesday…
“The return to this venue is a plus and he looks a big player here…”
Timeform on Charlie Arthur
Brenner Pass – 17:20 Southwell
Brenner Pass proved his effectiveness at this track when runner-up in a good-looking minor event over this course and distance last year. He didn’t need to be at his best to open his account on turf at Lingfield last month, but improved in defeat on handicap debut on the all-weather track there last time. The step back up to six furlongs will suit and he makes plenty of appeal in a handicap that lacks depth with the cheekpieces left off.
Final Voyage – 17:50 Southwell
This won’t take much winning and Final Voyage sets a good standard for his three rivals to aim at. He improved from his debut to open his account at Chelmsford in July, and bounced back from a disappointing run at York when third at Kempton last time. That was a tactical affair, and Final Voyage could be a tough nut to crack if returned to more prominent tactics in this small field. His effectiveness on fibresand will have to be taken on trust, but he represents a yard that do well here and is worth chancing.
Charlie Arthur – 18:50 Southwell
Charlie Arthur completed a hat-trick of wins at this course earlier this year and judged by his last two starts at Kempton he still seems to be getting better. He ran well to split a couple of three-year-old handicap debutants last time, perhaps disadvantaged by being hampered just as the race was developing, though he got to within a neck of the winner in the final furlong and she found extra. The return to this venue is a plus and he looks a big player here.
