How Will Dillashaw Do After 2.5 Years Away?
After TJ Dillashaw got knocked out by Henry Cejudo back in January of 2019 for the flyweight title, he was flagged by USADA and suspended for two years for EPO use. He was supposed to return in May against Cory Sandhagen, but the former champ suffered a cut, and the fight was delayed until now.
Sandhagen & Dillashaw Recent Fights
|Frankie Edgar, win by KO||Fight 1||Henry Cejudo, loss by TKO (flyweight title fight)|
|Marlon Moraes, win by TKO||Fight 2||Cody Garbrandt, win by TKO (title fight)|
|Aljamain Sterling, loss by submission||Fight 3||Cody Garbrandt, win by TKO (title fight)|
|Raphael Assuncao, win by decision||Fight 4||John Lineker, win by decision|
This is such an intriguing matchup as it’s hard to know how Dillashaw will do after two-and-a-half years away. When he was competing, he was arguably the greatest bantamweight of all time but he’s now 35-years-old. However, during the time off, he got double shoulder surgery and he’s coming back in full health.
Sandhagen, meanwhile, has looked like a different fighter since his submission loss to Sterling back in June of 2020. After the loss, he said his mindset switched, and he now wants to hurt his opponents, and he has back-to-back highlight-reel KO wins.
Sandhagen & Dillashaw Stats
Sandhagen and Dillashaw do have some common opponents in Raphael Assuncao and Lineker, but those fights were at different stages of Assuncao and Lineker’s career, so it’s hard to take much from it.
On the feet, Sandhagen will use spinning attacks and kicks to try and KO Dillashaw. However, I think if the former champ decides to wrestle he could have success as that is the only weakness we have seen in Sandhagen’s game. Both men also have legit KO power to shut their opponent’s lights off with one shot.
This is a phenomenal fight where the winner will likely be facing the winner of Yan-Sterling for the belt. It’s also a very close fight, but I lean towards Dillashaw even though the layoff does worry me. However, I still believe he’s the best bantamweight in the world.
Dillashaw is known for his footwork, and I believe he’ll be able to avoid the power shots of Sandhagen and use his clinch and wrestling to grind on Sandhagen. Sandhagen also doesn’t have the experience in five rounds, which I think will hurt him as I think Dillashaw gets a fourth or fifth-round stoppage win. At plus money, Dillashaw is being offered at a great price in the UFC Vegas 32 odds.
Pick: TJ Dillashaw (+155)
Will Ladd Get a Title Shot With A Win?
Aspen Ladd is back after recovering from knee surgery against TUF 28 winner Macy Chiasson in a potential title eliminator bout at bantamweight.
Ladd & Chiasson Recent Fights
|Yana Kunitskaya, win by TKO||Fight 1||Marion Reneau, win by decision|
|Germaine de Randamie, loss by TKO||Fight 2||Shana Young, win by decision|
|Sijara Eubanks, win by decision||Fight 3||Lina Lansberg, loss by decision|
|Tonya Evinger, win by TKO||Fight 4||Sarah Moras, win by TKO|
This is a tough comeback fight for Ladd coming off knee surgery as she faces a tall, rangy striker in Chiasson who uses her jab well to keep her opponents at distance.
In the first round, I do think it will take some time for Ladd to find her timing coming off the knee. However, as the fight plays out, I think the California native will start mixing in her wrestling along with her striking and control the second and third rounds to win a clear-cut decision.
Pick: Aspen Ladd (-200)
Other UFC Vegas 32 Picks:
- Kyler Phillips (-280): Phillips is facing a short-notice opponent in Paiva who’s moving up a weight class. I expect Phillips to piece him up and get a TKO win.
- Darrick Minner (-155): Minner should be able to use his wrestling and grind out a decision win over Elkins.
- Maycee Barber (+110): This is a very intriguing matchup but I do think Barber will be able to keep it standing and land the better shots to win a decision.
- Jordan Williams (-195): Williams should be able to keep this fight standing and pick apart Gall for a clear-cut decision.
