Alizé Cornet vs Tsvetana Pironkova

Unseeded Cornet and Pironkova will face off against each other in the fourth round of the US Open. Both have had a long career thus far and are looking to continue their success at the US Open. Going into the match, the odds are fairly even.

Pironkova has been surprising people since the first round of the tournament. The Bulgarian has won all her matches in straight sets at the US Open, sending two seeded players home. Her consistency, as well as her ability to minimize unforced errors have been her biggest strengths.

Cornet heads into the round of 16 having never made it past the fourth round since she started playing at the highest level in 2005. In her first two rounds she beat her opponents fairly easily, but found herself facing Madison Keys in the previous round. Keys, the favorite, ended up suffering a neck injury that forced her to retire in the second set.

These two players have seen each other three times before, with their first meeting happening in 2007. Pironkova holds the head-to-head record at 2-1, but Cornet won their most previous meeting in 2011.

This will be a hard fought battle between the two players, definitely going the distance. Based on previous play and consistency in this tournament, the best bet is leaning towards Pironkova.

Pick: Pironkova (-105)

[16] Elise Mertens vs [2] Sofia Kenin

Kenin didn’t have the best start to her play when the tennis world resumed at the Cincinnati Open, but she has been able to find success at the US Open so far, getting rid of any rust she may of had. On Saturday she found herself winning her third straight-set win against Ons Jabeur, earning her spot in the round of 16. Some are saying that she is back to her Australian Open form, which she won earlier this year.

Mertens hasn’t faced a seeded player in the tournament yet, and Kenin will definitely be her hardest match to date. In her third round match, she found herself down early, but was able to break her opponent in five of six chances, and collected 22 winners.

Kenin and Mertens have seen each other twice before in 2019, with Kenin taking both matches. Neither player has dropped a set yet at the tournament, making for an interesting matchup between the two. For each player, this will be the toughest opponent they have seen at the US Open, which will definitely result in a match that will most likely go the distance.

Pick: Kenin (-136)

[15] Maria Sakkari vs [3] Serena Williams

A rematch of the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Masters will take place at the US Open when Maria Sakkari and Serena Williams face each other. The two have only played each other twice before, splitting the head-to-head record at 1-1. What makes this match interesting is that just last week, Sakkari beat Williams.

Sakkari has never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam prior to this season. She has now done it twice in both her appearances at the Australian and US Open. Her match against Amanda Anisimova really set a tone, where she went on to defeat her opponent in a dominating 6-3, 6-1 match that only lasted 55 minutes.

Williams heads into this match following a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Sloane Stephens. She hasn’t had a break in her opponents, with each giving her a tough match. But what Williams can do over many players is find that way to win. Which we’ve seen on multiple occasions, when she’s able to find that extra gear.

With the level of tennis both players are playing, expect this to go three sets.

Pick: Williams (-245)
